When we admire a diamond, we first notice the diameter size. How large the diamond looks "face up" is more important than the actual weight. Most people believe that weight and size are standard. That a one-carat diamond always has the same diameter.
However we know, (cut section page 6) that diamond cutters often retain extra weight in cutting a deeper pavilion and/or higher crown and/or thicker girdle, this results in a smaller diameter diamond as compared to a well proportioned Antwerp Ideal cut diamond of the same weight.

Not only will a deep diamond look smaller, but as we know it will have a noticeable decrease in beauty.

Shallow cut stones will measure slightly larger, but their beauty diminishes much faster than with deeper stones

Having learned about cut and its association to carat-weight, it should now be apparent that we pay for a diamond by weight, but judge it by size.
