With this tutorial completed you are now aware of the complexities of each of the 4C characteristics. The relative rarity of these characteristics set a diamond's value. Very slight differences in colour, clarity, cut and weight can make enormous differences in price.

CUT - even though we have discussed the visual properties affected by cut to evaluate these objectively takes years of practice, proper lighting and equipment.   Since quality of cut is so complex and often overlooked in pricing, badly cut stones are often over valued.

COLOUR - Judging the body colour of a diamond takes special light conditions and known colour diamonds, called master stones. Even an experienced diamond grader cannot determine colour without comparing to master stones. Although a difference in one colour grade will not be obvious, it can make a great difference in price.

CLARITY - Grading clarity with a ten power loupe takes a lot of practise and special lighting. A microscope will make it easier to see the inclusions, assigning the proper grade requires expertise. In the higher clarity grades the visual difference is minimal but due to the rarity of "clean" stones the value difference can be enormous.

CARAT WEIGHT - Is not a subjective quality and can be directly weighed with the proper equipment.
